Green Tax Credits – Are They Coming Our Way?August 15, 2007
Green Tax Credits – Are They Coming Our Way?
New York state and Maryland already have “green” tax credits. These are state tax credits, not federal. Given that 50% of all greenhouse gases are a by-product of the use and construction of buildings, “green” tax credits seem to be a good way to benefit the environment and the bottom line as well.
In 2000, New York state passed an innovative Green Building Tax Credit for business and personal income taxpayers. The credit can apply towards corporate taxes, personal income taxes, insurance corporation taxes and banking corporation taxes. The incentive applies to owners and tenants of eligible buildings and tenant spaces that meet certain "green" standards. These standards increase energy efficiency, improve indoor air quality, and reduce the environmental impacts of large commercial and residential buildings in New York state, among other benefits.
For the complete regulation, visit the Department of Energy Conservation for New York.
