| Property Tax Protest Deadline is Thursday, May 31st
The deadline to appeal your property taxes for 2007 is Thursday, May 31st. The exception is if the appraisal district mailed your notice of assessed value after May 2. In this situation, you have 30 days after the day they mailed your notice to protest. They do not have to mail a notice of assessed value unless your value changes by more than $1,000. Most appeals are successful and the average savings for a home can be significant. You can appeal market value or unequal appraisal (that you are over-assessed compared to similar nearby properties.) If you appeal, the appraisal district will not automatically inspect your house (they do not have time) or retaliate because you appealed. Your value cannot increase at the informal hearing without your approval and is very unlikely to increase at the appraisal review board hearing. Filing a protest is easy! If you feel your property's assessed value is too high, it's your right to file a formal protest. You can protest your property value yourself following these steps:
