Tax Exemptions and Extended Stays Away from Home

Extended leaves from your primary residence are not uncommon and can occur for various reasons. Perhaps you're being transferred due to work, military assignment or temporarily living with a relative who needs extended care. Property tax benefits from exemptions still apply, to a point.

The Texas Property Tax Code states a home qualifying for an exemption (Homestead, Over 65, Disabled Veteran, etc.) does not lose its exempt status if any of these three specific reasons apply:
  1. When the owner temporarily stops occupying it as a principal residence if that owner does not establish a different principal residence and the absence is for less than two years and the owner intends to return and occupy the structure as the owner's principal residence.
  2. When the absence is caused by the owner's military service outside of the United States as a member of the military.
  3. When the absence is due to residency in a facility that provides services related to health, infirmity or aging.
If you are going to be away from your home for some time but intend to return, you can rest assure any exemption you qualify for will be there waiting on you… just like that big stack of mail.
