Texas Property Tax Tips
Advice and suggestions to help property owners achieve fair & equal assessments and reduce property taxes.

Double Check Your Property Information

No one is perfect, including the county appraisal district. Often mistakes are made on the size, address, or other aspects of the real estate assessed by the taxing districts. In many cases, these mistakes favor the county appraisal district.

You can check the information the county has on your property by simply going to their website. You can look up your account by your account number if you know it or your property's street address. Either way, you can see the size of the property the county has for you, your contact information (typically mailing address) and other important clerical information that could prevent you from receiving your notices or meeting your protest deadlines.

If you find errors in your information, section 25.25 of the Texas Property Tax Code makes provisions for you to get the information corrected. And not just for the current year, but for the past five years as well. This form is online and easy to complete.

The applicable errors include clerical errors that affect a property owner's liability for a tax imposed in that tax year, multiple appraisals of a property in that tax year, or the inclusion of property that does not exist in the form or at the location described in the appraisal roll. The result could mean significant savings, reimbursement of past taxes or reduction in liability for delinquent taxes.

If you feel the information the county has on you is incorrect, you have the right to protest. You can protest your property information yourself, or hire a professional consultant to handle your protest for you. Either way, there's no reason to pay more property taxes than is required by law.
