| Correcting the Texas Property Tax Roll - Part I
Accidents sometimes happen. But if they aren't your fault, why would you pay for them? The Texas Property Tax Code makes provisions for clerical and other errors on the tax role and how the chief appraiser or homeowner can submit changes to make the tax role more accurate. According to section 25.25 of the tax code, the chief appraiser may change the appraisal roll at any time to correct a name or address, a determination of ownership, a description of property, multiple appraisals of a property, or a clerical error or other inaccuracy as prescribed by board rule that does not increase the amount of tax liability. Section 25.25(c) of the tax code allows for corrections to apply to not only one year, but to the five preceding years. It's important that each homeowner carefully review the appraisal district's records in order to confirm that their data is correct. If you find an error, all you need to do is fill out the proper form.
