Correcting the Texas Property Tax Roll - Part II

Last month's newsletter began a discussion on how section 25.25c of the Texas Property Tax Code allows for corrections by the chief appraiser for errors such as name or address, a determination of ownership, a description of property, multiple appraisals of a property, or a clerical error or other inaccuracy as prescribed by board rule that does not increase the amount of tax liability. But what if there is a different sort of issue that shows your value is wrong?

Section 25.25h has provisions on how to correct the tax roll in this situation. Specifically, it states, "The appraisal review board, on the joint motion of the property owner and the chief appraiser filed at any time prior to the date the taxes become delinquent, shall by written order correct an error that resulted in an incorrect appraised value for the owner's property."

What this means is you and the chief appraiser can work together to correct any inaccuracies regarding your property and get your taxes to the appropriate amount.

The correction request is straightforward and the form can be found online. Simply fill it out and submit it with any backup documentation you have to your county appraisal district. Once submitted and the discrepancy is recognized, the county may make the necessary adjustments to your property tax records and adjust your property taxes accordingly.

There are multiple ways to protest with county appraisal districts and it's within your rights to do so if you feel their value is wrong. In fact, you can sometimes prevail in a protest even if the only issue is that your taxes are lower than some of your neighbors. Protesting helps keep the county appraisal district in line and your taxes low.
