HaysCAD 2017 Property Tax Protests
Hays County Appraisal District Property Tax Protests:- Hays County property owners filed 14,600 protests in 2017. This is a 23.20% increase over 2016 and a 36.96% increase over 2015. The portion of Hays County accounts protested increased from 12.34% to 15.82% in 2015 to 2017. Owners filed protests for: 1) houses (7,900) and 2) commercial / other (6,710). Hays County protests for houses are rising more quickly than appeals for commercial / other. Single family owners filed appeals for $2,34 billion of houses and commercial owners filed appeals for $1.34billion. The value of Hays County houses protested in 2017 rose from $1.22 billion last year to $2.34 billion this year. Hays County Appraisal District conducted 12,510 informal protests and Hays County Appraisal Review Board held 1,000 ARB hearings. Hays County protests settled informally rose from 5,250 in 2015 to 12,510 in 2017. Hays County property owners achieved property tax savings totaling $13 million (based on 2.7% tax rate and no exemptions) for informal and formal (ARB) hearings. Hays County property owners who protested and attended the informal hearing were successful in 77.55% of appeals in 2017, but only about 15.82% protested. Is it a mystery why more donât appeal given the probability of success.
