Medina County Appraisal District received property tax appeals for a total of 1,880 real property and BPP accounts in 2018 versus 487 in 2017. The 2018 property tax protest count was for 1,330 commercial/industrial/other properties and 540 for houses (71% commercial vs 29% houses). The total value of Medina County property protested in 2018 was $0.5 billion, including $0.12 billion for houses and $0.38 billion for commercial/other. Medina County Appraisal Review Board (ARB) conducted 303 ARB hearings while Medina County Appraisal District coordinated 333 hearings. The property tax savings were massive, a total of $1 million for all types of property at both the informal hearings and the formal / ARB hearings (estimate based on no exemptions and 2.7% tax rate.). Medina County property owners who protested and attended the informal hearing were successful in 165.47% of appeals in 2018, but only about 4.33% protest. Is it a mystery why more don’t appeal given the probability of success.
